I agree that Freespace 2 is a pretty good alternative for more modern gaming.
The voiceover actor for the cutscenes was great, I really loved the tenor of that voice and think about it often. (This is not a criticism, the game is amazing for its time and platform.) I've replayed the first one through an emulator, and the controls are very rudimentary - the sort of thing you'd forgive on a PS1 but could never tolerate in 2020.
